A Word on Whiplash Trigger Points

Whiplash, Accident, Spine Research, Spinal InjuryA Whiplash Study

Recently, a study was done of 100 patients who either suffered from whiplash-associated disorders, Fibromyalgia, non-traumatic chronic cervical syndrome, or endogenous depression. 85.1% of those who suffered from whiplash showed sensitivity in their semispinalis capitis muscle, which is in the upper part of the back of the neck.

Interestingly enough, that muscle is also a trigger point of people who suffer from Fibromyalgia or non-traumatic chronic cervical syndrome. Though, as a trigger point, those who suffer from Whiplash are more sensitive to pain in this muscle, which is in the upper neck.

Below are some other facts from this study by Dr. Dan Murphy on the effects of Whiplash on the body

Whiplash Facts

  1. Sufferers may also experience headaches, brachialgia (pain radiating into one or both arms), vertigo or dizziness, problems with chewing or swallowing, blurred vision, and more.
  2. Pain resulting from whiplash may be the result of injuries to the muscles, facet joints, ligaments, disks, and nerve roots.
  3. Brachialgia may be the result of Myofascial tension of the scalene muscles causes a functio-nal thoracic outlet syndrome.
  4. Excess amounts of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction and increased intracellular calcium cause mechanical trauma which activates local muscle contraction. The result is increased metabolism and relative local ischemia, which causes a failure of the calcium pump required for the muscle relaxation.

Whiplash and your Spine

It seems the part of the body that suffers the most damage due to whiplash is the upper cervical spine. This makes sense, as whiplash occurs because of hyperextension of the ligaments in the neck. That’s why it’s important to entrust your care to an upper cervical chiropractor, who will examine your upper neck vertebrae and make any needed adjustments so as to realign the top two vertebrae in your neck. The heavy head rests on these top 2 vertebrae in the position of the head relative the neck is extremely important for the health and function of the rest of the body.
