What is among one of the most devastating medical conditions as regards pain as well as its impact on social situations? It is a group of conditions know as Cranial Nerve Compressive Syndromes. These include trigeminal neuralgia, Bell’s palsy, Hemi facial spasm and others.
What are the Medical Options?
The common medical practices for these conditions are quite invasive, like Botox injections. Botox is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum.
Another option available is a type of brain surgery called Microvascular Decompression, which is a neurosurgical procedure. The risks involved include facial weakness, stroke, hearing loss, and even death. It can cost up to $70,000.00 for the surgery alone.
The Option of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care
Before a major decision is made as to treatment options, another question should be considered. Does the person have a history of neck or head trauma? If so, could misalignment of the upper neck be causing the dysfunction of these cranial nerves?
There has been some amazing research done on the upper cervical spine by Dr. Michael Burcon, an upper cervical chiropractor and researcher from Michigan. In his research, he has discovered that over 90% of patients who have been diagnosed with these types of conditions have suffered a head or neck trauma, usually whiplash, approximately 15 years prior.
Here’s an example from his research: A 57-year-old female presented with right sided trigeminal neuralgia (TN) of two years’ time. TN pain seemed to be helped by medication but was made worse by exposure to cold. She also complained of high blood pressure, diminished hearing in her left ear, hypothyroidism, neck pain, right shin numbness, allergies, and bilateral shoulder pain. She was taking the medication Gabapentin for her trigeminal neuralgia. She took 900 mg 3xs/day (2700 total, with 3600 being the maximum prescribed). Her history included being knocked unconscious in a fall when she was ten years old, another traumatic fall while skiing thirteen years earlier, and a recent fall on the sidewalk.
She had her first upper cervical adjustment and a week later noted that the TN pain had dramatically gotten better in intensity and frequency. She discussed this with her neurologist and began cutting back on her Gabapentin. After eight weeks, the patient was completely off the medication and pain-free. She also was able to reduce her blood pressure medication by fifty percent. She continues to have maintenance care and reports that, after two years, she is still pain-free without medication, even after major dental work.
Dr. Burcon concludes this study by stating, “Although a case study is limited in its ability to provide conclusions, this study is a typical representation of over three hundred cases researched at Burcon Chiropractic over the past ten years, where the same protocol is used for all one sided brain stem disorders, including Bell’s palsy, migraine headaches, Meniere’s syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.”
