The Natural Approach to Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)

MTBI, Brain Injury, Neck Injury, Head Injury, Neck TraumaChildhood TBI

Did you know that the leading cause of death and disability among children and adolescents in the US is traumatic brain injury. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention listed those two age groups as being at the greatest risk of receiving a traumatic brain injury. People within those two groups account for 564,000 children being been admitted to emergency rooms every year.

Though, it is a misconception that in order for a person to have suffered from a traumatic brain injury, they must have fallen into a coma, had a skull fracture, lacerations, broken bones, or at least have lost consciousness. Brain injuries can happen from motor vehicle accidents when a person suffers from whiplash as well as from sports related injuries, falls, physical trauma, or anything that includes a head or neck injury.

Many children who go to emergency rooms for traumatic brain injuries are released only to continue to suffer from symptoms for many years including the following:

  • Cognitive problems (Inattention, memory loss, mental confusion, etc.)
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia/Sleep Disorders
  • Dizziness/Vertigo
  • Anxiety/Depression
  • Speech Problems
  • Neck and Back pain

Through various case studies, Upper cervical chiropractor and former WCA researcher of the year of 2001 Dr. Erin Elster demonstrated the effects of misalignments in the upper neck of children who suffered from traumatic brain injuries or mild spinal cord injuries.

The good news is for those children who suffer from traumatic brain injuries, whether they are due to sports related injuries, whiplash, are other events, can find hope through upper cervical chiropractic. That is a specific and gentle type of chiropractic that focuses on aligning the top two vertebrae in the spine.

When those two vertebrae, also known as the upper cervical spine, are out of alignment by as little as ΒΌ of a millimeter, they can place enough pressure on the brainstem so as to hinder the brain’s ability to communicate with the body. An upper cervical chiropractor can examine the upper neck vertebrae to see if their any misalignments in those top two bones in the neck.

If they find any misalignments in those two bones, they will make the necessary adjustment to correct that misalignment. This will allow the brain to communicate with the body properly, so the body can begin to heal itself.
