The BBC made a bold statement about migraines saying they can possibly be avoided entirely in some cases! Is there any truth to this? Well, let’s first find out why they said what they did.
They were talking about the way that people are treating their headaches and migraines by using over-the-counter pain medications. It has been discovered that if someone is doing this on a very regular basis, it can actually be causing more headaches in the long run. This type of a headache is called a rebound or medication overuse headache.
While it is true that medication can give some temporary relief, it can also cause another headache in a couple of hours or even the next day. It becomes a vicious cycle according to Prof. Martin Underwood. Taking medication to relieve a migraine that causes another migraine and then more medication use. These types of headaches and migraines can get increasingly worse each time.
Rebound headaches and migraines are becoming so common that the National Institute for Health and Clinical excellence, located in the UK, lists it first when recommending how to care for a migraine. They also relate that these types of headaches feel similar to normal headaches, so it is hard to know when a person has one. In other countries, up to 5% of people are possibly being afflicted. The World Health Organization reports similar findings.
Where to Find Migraine Relief
First of all, it is important to stop taking pain medication to alleviate migraines. This is especially important if one is taking medication more than twice a week or more than 10 times in a month. This may lead a person to wonder how he or she will care for them.
One underlying cause of migraines has been determined to be a misalignment in the upper neck vertebrae. By finding this misalignment and then using a gentle, effective method to correct it, many have seen a vast improvement in their migraines. Some report seeing them go away completely with the use of medication no longer necessary.
