How to Help Alleviate Symptoms of Torticollis

Torticollis, Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Headache, Headaches, Migraine, Migraines, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, One may wonder exactly what is torticollis? It is a condition in which the head is made to tip to one side causing the neck to twist and the chin to be turned opposite. It often happens due to damage that has been incurred in the spine, nervous system, or muscles. It may be hereditary or come about due to changes in genetics. Congenital torticollis happens at birth possibly due to a change in blood supply to the neck or a muscle injury. Also, it is possible the baby’s head was positioned incorrectly in the womb. However, torticollis can also occur in adulthood.

Spasmodic Torticollis

This is an extremely painful condition that causes the head to involuntarily move backwards or forward. It is also called cervical dystonia and is caused by contractions of the muscles within the neck.  It may be due to trauma, such as injury to the upper neck and back or a mild concussion. With infants, this can occur the cord was wrapped around the neck during birth or because of the use of forceps or suction when the baby was delivered. It may take weeks or even years for spasmodic torticollis to show up.

Common Forms of Treatment

If damage was done to the spine, muscles, or nervous system, treatment begins by finding the exact cause. Medical doctors often suggest the following:

  • Medicine, including the anticholinergic drug baclofen
  • Lessening head and neck pain by applying heat and massage to the cervical spine
  • Temporary relief by botulinum toxin injections (Botox), requiring several injections
  • Surgery on the spine if the vertebra has been dislocated
  • Braces for the neck and exercises to stretch the neck and reduce spasms

What About Natural Methods of Treatment?

At Johnson Spinal Care, we have seen much success in treating our patients with torticollis. We do not use the tradition methods of popping and twisting the spine. Rather we use a very gentle approach called NUCCA that corrects the misalignment without causing pain or further damage.

Our goal is to reduce the irritation to the central nervous system by reversing the damage of the neck injury. By doing this, many have reported a drastic decrease in symptoms and report feeling much better.
