If a person experiences improper neck alignment, a number of health problems can ensue. Visual disturbances can be a direct result of this. The following are examples of disorders that affect the eye or have visual problems as a symptom:
- Pink eye
- Meniere’s disease
These are sometimes difficult to diagnose properly and even harder to find a solution for. It may be a process of first visiting a primary care doctor, then an ophthalmologist, and possibly a neurologist. Some people have a number of other health problems that makes treating the condition more problematic.
How Improper Neck Alignment Can Be a Contributing Factor
A recent trend in patients has been noted by one Doctor of Optometry (OD). A 12-year-old girl who was up-to-date on her visual check-ups suddenly developed poor vision. She also related that she had recently endured an injury to her neck while playing basketball. The OD referred her to a chiropractor. The chiropractor found that her upper neck bones were not in proper alignment. He gave her an adjustment to correct the problem. Ten minutes later she returned to the OD’s office, and he found her vision to be back to normal.
Upper cervical chiropractors are specially trained to look for small misalignments in the upper neck vertebrae. It only takes a misalignment of ¼ of a millimeter to cause major problems throughout the body. This is due to the fact that the nervous system is affected by improper neck alignment.
The brainstem passes through the C1 vertebrae, also called the atlas bone. If this bone is misaligned, undue pressure is put on the brainstem and hinders the nervous system from proper function. Once realigned, patients often report feeling and even seeing better. A small study was done involving 30 cases of those having visual problems. The study revealed that after an adjustment and once again having proper neck alignment, all 30 saw improvement in their vision.
