Unfortunately, most chronic shoulder pain occurs when someone has been injured and does not know it. The pain doesn’t start until the condition has progressed, perhaps even years after the initial injury. At other times, this situation occurs because of a repetitive motion or general overuse. Why may your shoulder be in pain? Here are a few things that cause shoulder pain.
- Bursitis – This is a particular type of inflammation that affects the Bursa sac, a fluid-containing sac that lubricates the various parts of the shoulder. When the should is repeatedly twisted, moved rapidly, damaged by injury, are affected by infection or arthritis, this condition can occur.
- Tendinitis – This is another inflammation disorder, this time involving the tissue tendons that connect the shoulder bones to the surrounding muscles. It is a common condition in large joints like the shoulder, knee, and elbow. Related conditions include tendinosis (when a tiny tear occurs) and tendinopathy (a combination of inflammation and a tear).
- Muscle Strain – When you pull a shoulder muscle, the cause is usually overuse. Severity will vary depending on how overstretched the tissue became. The result is tenderness and pain around the shoulder that gets worse when you move. Bruising or swelling may also occur. Severe tears can cause a deformity or bulge at the location of the injury.
