They are caused by a disruption in the brainstem. Before an actual migraine comes on, the person will have an aura. This may include dizziness, seeing double, and having problems with coordination. It occurs between 10 and 45 minutes before the head pain begins.

Vertigo and migraines are two very debilitating conditions and when they happen together, as they do with basilar migraines, can be hard to cope with. A person may also have cold hands and feet. Basilar migraines can last from 4 – 72 hours, leaving a person without energy for 24 hours after the headache dissipates.

What is the Basilar Artery?

This artery makes up part of the blood supply system for the brain and central nervous system. It is formed at the base of the skull where the two vertebral arteries come together.  It carries oxygen-rich blood to the cerebellum, the brainstem, and the occipital lobes.

Sometimes basilar migraines indicate a bigger problem than just a bad headache. They should never be ignored as they can be a warning that things such as brain damage, malfunction of certain organs, or even death can be happening. Any time blood flow is disturbed, an aneurysm or a bulge in the brain can cause a rupture or a hemorrhage.

Upper Cervical Chiropractors and Migraines

Once any serious concerns are ruled out, it is a good time to seek out the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. We have seen much success in treating our patients with many types of headaches and migraines. A tiny misalignment in the upper neck may be the cause of a person’s migraines. This can disrupt blood flow to the brain, thereby affecting the body’s communication system. Once we find this misalignment and work to correct it, our patients have reported a decrease in intensity and occurrences of migraines. Some have even stated that their headaches have gone away altogether.
