study was conducted involving 1,450 patients in the Ohio Bureau of Worker’s Compensation database. These patients had been diagnosed with disc herniation, disc degeneration, or radiculopathy, which is a nerve condition that causes weakness and tingling in the limbs. 50% of the patients studied had surgery, while the other 50% did not. They all had comparable degrees of back pain.

When being re-evaluated two years later, only 26% of those that had back surgery had returned to work. 67% of those who didn’t have surgery were able to work. What’s more disturbing is that there was a 41% increase in the use of painkillers, particularly opiates, in those who had surgery.

In conclusion, the study shows that only about 1 out of 4 people having back surgery was able to go back to work. Also, 50% of those who underwent surgery are likely to have more pain, as seen from the amount of painkillers being used. A person may wonder if there is a non-invasive alternative to having back surgery.

How Upper Cervical Chiropractic Alleviates Back Pain

Often, back pain is caused by an accident or injury that has affected the head or neck. Misalignments in the upper part of the neck are very common due to the fact that this area of the body is the most movable.

An upper neck misalignment throws off the balance of the neck and the head causing the head to tilt. A tilt of only 3/4 of a degree will cause the brain to make changes in the body’s posture. One of the functions of the brain is to keep the eyes and ears level with the horizon. When a misalignment causes the position of the had to change, the shoulders tilt and eventually the hips are affected which results in an imbalance in the muscular system throughout the whole body.

At Johnson Spinal Care, we focus our attention on correcting the original misalignment in the upper neck. This is often the underlying cause of health problems throughout the body. Such things as pain, sciatica, and disc related problems are often due to a neck misalignment. Once corrected, our patients frequently report a significant decrease in the symptoms of back pain.
