What You need to know about Cervical Vertigo

Vertigo, Dizzy, HeadacheWhen your World doesn’t Spin

Just when you thought you knew everything there was to know about Vertigo, we’re going to tell you about a type of Vertigo you’ve probably never heard of before. That’s Cervical Vertigo, also called  Cervicogenic Dizziness.

Basically, it’s a non-rotary dizziness that causes a person to become unsteady due to sporadic movements of their neck that changes the person’s position because of the uncontrollable repositioning of the neck.

The odd thing about this type of Vertigo is that there is no spinning sensation associated with it. That means people who suffer from it will need to look for other signs of the existence of this condition.

Cervical Vertigo and Your Spine

No one is quite sure what causes this form of dizziness, but there is no shortage of theories. Some theories include whiplash,  cervical spondylosis (wear and tear in the upper cervical spine due to age), and more.

Though, one leading theory according to a study is that the underlying cause of this condition may be due to a dysfunction in deep muscular proprioceptors (sensors that provide information about joints, limbs, and muscles) in the upper cervical spine.

When this dysfunction occurs due to a misalignment in the upper neck vertebrae, it hinders the Vestibular Nuclei from receiving the proper information via the brainstem. That path can be restored via a procedure called upper cervical chiropractic, so the  Vestibular Nuclei receives the right information.

Though, that will mean entrusting your care to an upper cervical chiropractor, so they can examine your upper neck vertebrae for any misalignments that may be the underlying cause of your Cervical Vertigo. Once they find any misalignments, they will make the necessary adjustments to your upper cervical spine, so as to take any undue pressure off of your brainstem, so your  Vestibular Nuclei can begin to receive the right information again.
